How does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy works by allowing us access to the sub-conscious mind which stores large amounts of information and emotions that on a day to day basis we are not really aware of. Some of this information and these emotions can get mixed up or filed in the wrong place, and that can cause your conscious mind to think and react in a way that can make you behave strangely, be stressed and/or create unhappiness in your life.

Unlock you mind

Sometimes there are conflicts between our conscious and sub-conscious mind which results in us acting irrationally to certain situations or events. But when we are in a trance our two minds come together and focus on the same thing. Hypnosis allows us to change the responses that have caused you problems by enabling you to react in the way our conscious and rational mind tells you. It can help get rid of unwanted habits that have restricted you from being happy in the past. It puts things back in their right place in the right order.


For instance, the conscious mind knows that there is no logical reason to be afraid of spiders (at least here in the UK) but the sub-conscious mind has attached a fear to spiders which can override your conscious thoughts because the sub-conscious mind is there to protect you, and doesn’t want you to take any chances. But in this instance, it has made a mistake. When you see a spider, your brain should pull out the filing cabinet a picture of a harmless house spider, but things have got mixed up somewhere, and it pulls out a picture of a tarantula (which live in Mexico by the way) and shouts “Run!”

When you are in a trance state you are in control of your thoughts and can focus on how you want your life to be, rather than how you don’t want it to be.

Nobody is going to make you be friends with a spider if you don’t want to, but you will now just treat them for what they are, little bugs, similar to flies or ladybirds, just ignore them, walk on by and get on with your day.

What do Hypnotherapists say?

Some Hypnotherapists use rigid scripts to tell patients what needs changing, but at Avon River, we make each session unique, adjusting what we need to do to the needs of the patient, where they are now in their life, and where they want to be. It may sound naff, but everyone really does see things differently, so you need a tailored approach.  The best results are often when the patient decides they want to change things, and can visualise what tomorrow, or next week might look like as a non smoker, or brimming with confidence, or calm and relaxed, or happy to be sitting on a plane on the way to a well earned holiday. Once you can see yourself doing these things you are more than halfway there.

Remember, we can’t make you do anything, so if you don’t want to change, we are limited in what we can do for you.

Once Upon a Time…

One tool we like to use, because patients like it, and it really really works, is using metaphors, often in the form of stories. Under hypnosis we tell you a tale that if you were fully awake would mean nothing to you. But because of the special way we tell these stories that are carefully aimed at you, your sub-conscious mind starts to realise that maybe you are like the person in the story, and the problems you are suffering from are quite similar to the ones in the story. Your mind then starts to work out the best way to overcome the problem you saw in the story, and the answer presents itself. Your mind now decides this new way of dealing with things is far better than what it used to do before. Result.

We made it happen, but You solved the problem.

Tomorrow, next week, next year…as life throws problem situations at you, your mind remembers this story it heard, and has already thought about what to do in similar situations, and your behaviour has changed… You now get on the plane, or walk past the spider, walk past the cream cake, no longer get angry or anxious, or feel relaxed and confident giving the Fathers speech at your daughter’s wedding. You become the person you always wanted to be, and leave all that baggage behind. You can now perform at your best.
